Chess King Faces 17-year-old Hungarian Prodigy
Budapest, Hungary — Chess legend Bobby Fischer's next opponent could be a 17-year-old Hungarian girl who's more of a prodigy than he was.
Fischer, who made headlines last year with his rematch against Boris Spassky, was in Hungary for a match against the world's top female player. State TV said the former world champion arrived amid talk of a possible match against 17-year-old chess whiz Judit Polgar.
Laszlo Polgar, Judit's father and manager, was quoted by the Budapest sports daily as saying conditions for a match had been agreed to.
“All we need now is the right sponsor.” he said.
Fischer, 50, was reported to have remained in Yugoslavia after beating Russian-born Spassky in November in their highly publicized match, played in defiance of U.N. sanctions.
Judit beat Fischer's record by one month as the youngest player ever to qualify for the men's international grandmaster classification, doing so at the age of 15 years and five months.
